How to clean a mattress in a humid climate: stains, smell and dust mites, step by step

To clean a mattress at home, vacuum both sides slowly, spot-treat stains by blotting (never soaking), cover it in baking soda for a few hours, vacuum again and let it dry completely. In a humid city like Johor Bahru, the drying and the room's humidity matter as much as the cleaning itself.

How do you clean a mattress at home, step by step?

Strip it, vacuum it, treat the stains with as little liquid as possible, deodorise with baking soda, vacuum again, and dry it fully before the sheets go back on. The whole job takes about 20 minutes of work plus a few hours of waiting. Here is the order we would follow:

StepWhat you doTime
1. StripTake off sheets, mattress protector and pillow covers; wash them hot5 min
2. VacuumUpholstery tool, slow overlapping strokes, crevice tool along the seams and piping10 min
3. Spot testDab your stain remover on a hidden edge, wait 5–10 minutes, check for colour change10 min (waiting)
4. Treat stainsBlot from the outside in with a damp cloth; never pour5–10 min
5. Baking sodaSift a thin layer over the whole top surface2 min + 2–8 hours
6. Vacuum againRemove all the powder5 min
7. DryFan, aircon or open window until it is dry to the touch, deep down2–6 hours

Do one side at a time. If your mattress is double-sided, flip it after the first side is dry and repeat steps 2 to 7.

Why should you never soak a mattress?

Because foam and padding hold water for a long time, and a mattress that stays damp in Malaysian humidity is a mould and smell problem waiting to happen. Mattress makers and cleaning guides agree on this point: keep the surface damp, never wet. Blot instead of rubbing, because rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the foam and spreads it wider. Memory foam is the worst for this, as it soaks up liquid like a sponge and dries slowly from the inside.

Johor Bahru's average humidity sits around 84%. That is why a carpet-cleaning approach (spray, scrub, leave to dry) works badly on a mattress here. Use the least liquid you can get away with, and add airflow straight away.

What removes sweat, urine and blood stains from a mattress?

Each stain needs a different approach, and the cheapest ones are often the best. Always test on a hidden edge first.

StainWhat worksWhat to watch for
Yellow sweat stainsA few drops of mild dish soap in cool water, blotted on; for stubborn ones, 3% hydrogen peroxide diluted with waterPeroxide can lighten dyed or dark covers; test first
Urine (children, pets)An enzyme-based cleaner, left to work as the label says, then blottedEnzyme cleaners break down the uric crystals that cause the smell; plain soap often leaves the odour behind
Fresh bloodCold water only, blotted; then a little diluted hydrogen peroxide if a mark remainsHot water sets blood stains
Unknown old stainMild soap first; peroxide only after a spot testSome old stains will not come out fully; that is normal

Guides differ on how strong to make the peroxide for memory foam: some say half and half with water, others suggest one part to four parts water. Start with the weaker mix and only go stronger if it is not working.

Which cleaning products must never be mixed on a mattress?

Never mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in the same bottle, and never use bleach on a mattress at all. Peroxide and vinegar together form peracetic acid, which the Missouri Poison Center warns can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs. Using one, rinsing the cloth, then using the other on a different day is a different matter, but there is rarely a reason to do it on a mattress.

Bleach is a bad idea for a different reason: it can break down foam and fabric, and leaves a residue on something you press your face into every night. And as we explain in our guide to cleaning products you should never mix, bleach plus an acid or an ammonia-based cleaner releases toxic gas. On a mattress, mild soap, peroxide and enzyme cleaner cover almost every stain.

Does baking soda actually remove mattress smell?

Yes for mild body and sweat smells, as long as you leave it long enough and vacuum it all off. Baking soda absorbs odours rather than killing anything. A thin, even layer left for at least a couple of hours (overnight is better if you have another bed to sleep in) and then vacuumed thoroughly is enough for a mattress that just smells "used".

It will not fix a urine smell that has soaked into the core, or a musty smell from mould. For urine, use an enzyme cleaner. For mustiness, the cause is usually humidity, and the fix is in the next section. If the whole room smells musty, our article on why a vacant unit smells musty explains where the smell comes from.

How do you get rid of dust mites in a mattress in Malaysia?

You cannot remove every dust mite by cleaning; you control them by keeping humidity down and washing bedding hot. Research led by Larry Arlian found that keeping the average daily indoor humidity below 50% restricts dust mite population growth. An EPA-funded study found that in homes where indoor humidity stayed below about 51%, live mites fell from about 401 per gram of dust to about 7 over 17 months.

That is a hard target in Johor Bahru, where outdoor humidity averages around 84%. Practical steps that actually help:

  • Run the aircon or a dehumidifier in the bedroom; both pull moisture out of the air
  • Use a washable mattress protector and wash it with the sheets
  • Wash sheets and protectors hot. Allergy guides commonly recommend 60°C or more
  • Vacuum the mattress every month or two with a clean upholstery tool
  • Let the bed breathe: pull the sheets back for an hour in the morning before making it

We are not going to tell you a mattress holds millions of mites, because we have not measured yours. What the research does show is that humidity matters more than any spray.

Is it worth putting a mattress in the sun?

It helps it dry and air out, but it is not a cure, and in Malaysia it carries its own risks. Sun and airflow dry out the surface and freshen the smell. The downsides here are practical: strong sun fades covers, a mattress is heavy and awkward to carry down from a condo, and an afternoon downpour can undo the whole job. If you have a balcony or porch and a dry morning, a few hours of airing is worth it. If not, a fan pointed at the mattress with the aircon on gets you most of the way.

How often should you clean a mattress?

Vacuum it every month or two, deep clean it about every six months, and deal with spills the day they happen. This matches the frequency in our cleaning frequency table. If someone in the house has asthma or allergies, more often is reasonable. Turning or flipping the mattress when you deep clean also helps it wear evenly.

What does professional mattress cleaning cost?

We could not find a published per-mattress price from a Johor Bahru company, so the closest public benchmark is Singapore. Helpling Singapore lists a queen mattress at S$75 for a basic clean, S$100 with steam and S$150 with extraction; a king is S$80, S$120 and S$175. Johor Bahru prices are generally lower than Singapore's, but ask for a written quote and what method they use.

MethodWhat it doesWhen it is worth it
Vacuum plus spot clean (DIY)Removes dust, most fresh stainsEvery mattress, every few months
SteamHeat on the surface; some odour reductionSmells and light stains; mattress must dry well after
Hot water extractionMachine sprays and sucks back water and soapOld urine, large stains; needs a fan and a dry day

Honest view: for most homes, the DIY steps above are all a mattress needs. Paying for extraction makes sense for a big urine accident, a mattress you are selling or moving into a rental, or a homestay with a stained bed before a guest arrives. Mattress extraction is not a service we list on our own price list; a specialist upholstery cleaner with the right machine is the better call for that.

What if you would rather not do the rest of the house yourself?

Cleaning the mattress is one job; the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen around it are where most of the hours go. If you run a homestay, our article on washing your own linen vs using a dobi shows what bedding really costs per bed. And if you would rather spend the weekend on something else, you can see what each cleaning service costs on our services page. We will tell you honestly if a job is cheaper to do yourself.
