How often should you clean what? A cleaning frequency table for a Johor Bahru home

A home needs cleaning on four rhythms: daily (dishes, kitchen counters), weekly (floors, bathroom, bed sheets, towels), monthly (washing machine seal, aircon filters, toilet deep clean) and every few months to yearly (mattress, pillows, oven, aircon servicing). In humid Johor Bahru, shorten anything that stays damp: towels, aircon filters and the bathroom.

What is the full cleaning frequency table?

Here it is on one page, so you can screenshot it or stick it on the fridge. Rows marked (published) follow a manufacturer or health-organisation guide linked at the end of this article. Rows marked (our habit) are what we do in practice when we clean homes; we did not find a study behind them, so adjust them to your own home.

If you only use half of this table, use the first three weekly rows and the monthly washing machine row. They cover most of what goes wrong in a humid house.

What really needs doing every day?

Only the things that touch food or sit in standing water: dishes and the sink, the counters and stove top after cooking, and food waste out of the house. Grease and food left overnight is what draws ants and cockroaches, and it is much easier to wipe fresh than to scrape off later. If you cook every day, that is roughly ten to fifteen minutes in total, in our experience.

The bathroom needs a quick dry-down rather than a clean: a squeegee on the shower glass and a wipe of the basin takes about a minute and makes the weekly clean easier, because mould and scale need damp surfaces to start. We explain why in bathroom mould in a humid climate.

What needs cleaning every week?

Bed sheets, towels, floors, the bathroom, and a quick fridge check. The Cleveland Clinic says to wash bed sheets at least once a week, using the hot cycle, and also to wash bath and hand towels at least once a week, two to three times a week if your home is humid. Washcloths should be swapped at least twice a week. Johor Bahru is humid most of the year, so the humid-home advice is the one that applies to you.

Towels also need to dry fully between uses. The same guide says to hang them spread out on a bar rather than bunched on a hook, because a towel that stays damp is where the smell starts.

For floors and the bathroom, the order you work in saves real time; see how to clean a bathroom in the right order in 25 minutes.

What needs cleaning every month?

The two things people forget are the aircon filters and the washing machine.

  • Aircon filters: Daikin Malaysia recommends cleaning the filters every two weeks, and at least monthly if that is not realistic. A clogged filter works the unit harder and the dust sits where the cold air passes.
  • Washing machine: Whirlpool says to wipe the door seal after every cycle and deep clean it about once a month or every 30 cycles. LG says at least once a month. Both say to leave the door open after the last load so it dries. A seal that stays wet is where black mould grows.
  • Toilet deep clean: SweepSouth, a South African home-cleaning company, lists a monthly toilet deep clean, which is the extra work beyond the weekly wipe: under the rim, the hinges and the base.
  • Floor traps (our habit): if a bathroom is used only occasionally, the water in the trap dries out and drain smell comes back up. Pouring a jug of water in once a month stops that.

What needs cleaning only every few months, or once a year?

Mattress and pillows, the oven, and the aircon service. The Sleep Foundation says to clean a mattress about every six months, and to rotate foam, latex and newer innerspring mattresses every 6 to 12 months (older innerspring ones every 2 to 6 months). It says pillow inserts should be washed every 4 to 6 months depending on type. SweepSouth lists the oven deep clean and the fridge full wipe-down every three months. Daikin Malaysia says to service an aircon at least once a year, ideally one to two months before the hottest period.

Behind and under furniture, curtains and window tracks are yearly in our practice. They are mostly about how a home looks, not health.

Which of these matter for health, and which are only about looks?

We did not find a study that ranks these, so treat this as our judgement rather than a measured result. The ones tied to damp and dust are the ones to keep on time: bed sheets and towels, the aircon filters, the washing machine seal, the bathroom and floor traps, plus anything that touches food. Mould and stale damp are what actually bother people's noses and breathing in humid homes.

The ones that are mainly about appearance: window tracks, the top of cupboards, grout colour, and the outside of the oven. Skipping those for a few months does not cause a problem; it just looks tired.

How do I fit this in without it taking over the week?

Pick a fixed day for each rhythm. Weekly items on one weekend morning, monthly items on the first of the month, quarterly items at the turn of each quarter. The goal is that the monthly list is never a surprise.

A realistic plan for a working household is: daily 10 to 15 minutes, weekly about 2 hours, monthly about 1 hour. Those times are our estimate for an ordinary flat, not a measured average.

Is any of this worth paying someone for?

Mostly, no. The daily and weekly lines cost almost nothing to do yourself, and the monthly washing machine and aircon filter jobs take a few minutes each. We would not tell anyone to pay a cleaner to do those.

It is worth paying when your weekend is the problem. A regular visit from us is a floor vacuum and a floor mop, so it covers the floor line of the weekly list, and you keep the rest; the home cleaning price is RM150 for two cleaners for two hours, and the weekly package is RM105 per visit. Deeper jobs such as grease, grout, window tracks and behind furniture are quoted after we see the place, because the time depends on the condition. We cover that difference in deep cleaning versus a regular clean. Aircon servicing is a technician's job, not ours.

If you would rather not do the heavier items yourself, see our home cleaning services and prices, or send an enquiry and we will tell you honestly which of your tasks are quicker to do yourself.
