Chinese New Year spring cleaning in Johor Bahru: what it costs and when to book for 2027

Chinese New Year spring cleaning in Johor Bahru costs about RM350 to RM650 as a deep clean of a two- or three-bedroom condo, or RM150 if one regular visit is enough. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027, so aim to book by mid-December or, at the latest, mid-January.
We are a cleaning company in Johor Bahru, so we have a stake in this. Plenty of homes do not need to pay anyone, though, and the sections below say which ones. We also did not find a single JB company that publishes a Chinese New Year price or a booking deadline, us included, so some of the numbers here come from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong. We say so each time.
How much does Chinese New Year spring cleaning cost in Johor Bahru?
It depends on how much of the home needs real work: about RM30 to RM60 in supplies if you do it yourself, RM150 for one regular visit from us, and roughly RM350 to RM650 for a deep clean of a two- or three-bedroom condo at published market rates.
| Option | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Two weekends of your own time | RM30–60 in supplies (our estimate) |
| One regular visit from us | 2 cleaners for 2 hours: upkeep of floors, kitchen and bathrooms | RM150 |
| Two visits back to back from us | The same scope as a 4-hour clean | RM300, or RM240 at the Trial pack rate |
| Deep clean, 2-bedroom condo | Grease, grout, window tracks, behind and under furniture | RM350–550 market rate |
| Deep clean, 3-bedroom condo | Same, larger | RM400–650 market rate |
| "Spring or event cleanup" | A Kuala Lumpur company's published band | RM400–2,000+ |
Three notes on that table. The RM240 assumes you buy the Trial pack (four visits for RM480, used within three months), and a pack bought from mid-November stays valid until Chinese New Year. Buying a pack does not by itself tell you a date is free, so ask for the date at the same time. Prices on our services page come live from our system, so check them there before you decide.
A regular visit is also not a deep clean. If you want the cooker hood degreased and the grout scrubbed, that is deep cleaning work, which we quote from photos. Our deep cleaning price guide breaks down those market rates by floor area, rooms and condition, and deep cleaning vs regular cleaning explains the difference in scope. Anything we add on the day costs +50%, so list it before the visit.
Do cleaning companies charge more before Chinese New Year?
Some do and some do not, and we found no published surcharge for Johor Bahru. Treat it as a question to put to each company in writing, because one Malaysian guide warns that some providers only reveal a festive premium in the final quote.
Here is what we could find, none of it from JB:
| Where | Source | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Malaysia | Clean Nest guide, May 2026 | Weekend and same-day bookings often cost more around CNY and Hari Raya; no amount given |
| Singapore | Women's Weekly, January 2017 | Of 5 companies, 2 added a charge before CNY, one of them 20% in a two-week window; 3 added none |
| Hong Kong | Consumer Council, January 2018 | 8 of the 10 companies that replied planned to raise prices, the most extreme by nearly double |
The Hong Kong and Singapore figures are old and from pricier markets, so do not expect the same amounts here. What they show is that the answer varies between companies in the same city. Our services page does not list a festive surcharge as we write this, but a page is not a promise about a particular date, so ask us the same question you would ask anyone else.
When should you book a cleaner for Chinese New Year 2027?
Book in the second half of December if you want a choice of dates, and by mid-January at the latest. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, eleven days earlier than in 2026, so guides that say "mid-January" were written for a later festival.
The weeks below apply one Kuala Lumpur company's published booking pattern to the 2027 date. It is a company's own claim from the Klang Valley, not JB data, so use it as a rough guide.
| Weeks before CNY | 2027 dates | Availability, per that guide |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 weeks | 12–26 December | Standard availability |
| 3 to 4 weeks | 9–16 January | Slots tighten quickly |
| 2 weeks | From 23 January | Very limited, mostly weekday afternoons |
| Final 10 days | From 27 January | Usually fully booked |
We could not find an independent count for Chinese New Year in Malaysia, and we do not trust the "300% more requests" figure that guide also quotes, since it gives no source. The closest news report is about Hari Raya: in March 2026 Bernama reported that one Klang Valley operator saw demand rise 20 to 30 percent over a normal month and declined some bookings for lack of staff, while a Kota Bharu operator said demand nearly doubled during Ramadan. A festival rush that fills up small teams is real, even if the exact size for CNY in JB is unknown.
Which spring cleaning jobs can you do yourself?
Most of them. Decluttering, the fridge, wardrobes, bedding, the altar and ordinary dusting need time rather than skill, and a family that shares the work can finish a condo over two weekends. That is our estimate, not a measurement. Pay for the jobs that are slow, high up or need the right chemicals.
| Job | Who should do it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Decluttering, wardrobes, cabinets | You | Nobody else can decide what to throw away |
| Altar and offerings | You or your family | Customs differ, so a cleaner should not move anything without being told |
| Inside the fridge | You | About 45 minutes |
| Bedding, mattress, fabric sofa | You, unless heavily stained | A vacuum and spot treatment go a long way |
| Cooker hood and kitchen grease | Either | Cheap but slow, because the degreaser has to sit |
| Bathroom mould and grout | Either | Easy for one corner, tiring for a whole bathroom |
| Windows, tracks, grilles, ceiling fans | A company, if high up | A ladder is the risky part |
| Aircon coil | An aircon technician | Not a cleaning job; book separately and early |
Before you start on the kitchen and bathroom, read which products never to mix. Bleach and acidic toilet cleaner in a closed bathroom is a real hazard, and spring cleaning is when people are most tempted to use both.
If you already have a part-time cleaner who knows the home, ask them first. They are usually cheaper, and you may not need a company at all. A small unit cleaned weekly may not need any of this.
What is the best order for spring cleaning before CNY?
Work from clutter to floors and from high to low, starting about four weeks before the festival, and leave the final floor clean for the last two or three days. Doing the floors first is the most common way to end up doing them twice.
| When in 2027 | What to do |
|---|---|
| Before 9 January | Declutter, throw things out, book any company and the aircon technician |
| 9–23 January | Curtains, sofa, mattress and bedding |
| 23–31 January | Kitchen, bathrooms, windows, fans: the deep clean goes here |
| Around the last week of January | Altar, on the day your family keeps; check your almanac |
| 3–5 February | One regular clean of floors and bathrooms |
| 6–7 February | Rest. By custom many families do not sweep on the first days |
Cleaning in December or early January also means you are not competing for the last week's slots. Nothing about a clean home requires it to happen in the final week, apart from that last round of floors.
What should you do if your JB home is empty until CNY?
Have it cleaned one to three days before you arrive, not weeks earlier, and ask someone to air it first. A home left closed in JB's humidity can smell musty, and dust settles again quickly. This applies especially to Singapore-based owners who come back only for the holidays.
Run every tap and pour water into each floor trap, then run the aircon for an hour or two. Why empty units smell explains the reasons in detail. If a company is doing the work while you are away, settle three things in advance: how they get in, who holds the key, and that they will send photos before you travel.
What should you ask before you pay a deposit?
Ask six things and get the answers in a message you can scroll back to. Scope differs more than price does: the Hong Kong report found some companies excluded wash basins, mouldy tiles, windows or ceilings from their service.
- Is there a surcharge on this date, and how much?
- How many cleaners, for how many hours?
- Is the cooker hood, grout, window track or inside of the fridge included?
- Do you bring the supplies, or do I?
- What does anything added on the day cost?
- If you cancel on me in the last week, what happens?
Divide the price by the cleaner-hours. Our regular clean works out to RM37.50 per cleaner-hour, and one cost-of-living survey puts cleaning help in JB at about RM41 an hour, on only a handful of data points. A price far below that, in the busiest weeks of the year, is cutting time somewhere.
If you would rather spend the two weekends on something else, check our current prices on the services page and send us your dates, or see what house cleaning costs in Johor Bahru for what a regular visit covers.
